I have finally watched the amazing film Anna Karenina and  it’s a visual feast. You can see why Jacqueline Durran has won the Oscar for best costume design at the Academy Awards.

Anna Karenina, adapted from the Tolstoy novel and starring Keira Knightley who has been dressed in a variety of lavish period pieces. The film is strongly stylised and the costumes reflect this through the extravagant shaped dresses (rumoured to have taken 50 hours to complete each one) and strong silhouettes.

Although the costumes aren’t historically accurate they reflect the times period of opulence (1870’s Russia). This movie is directed in such a way that it echoes a ballet or a beautifully romantic, yet tense theatre performance. The setting for the film being a theatre helps to turn the characters life’s into a theatrical performance.

I hope one day I will be able to work on such a stunning production. This film is a fantastic one and if you haven’t already please go and watch it now!
